MORE POWER FOR WOLVES

17/09/07

Worcester Wolves Basketball Club is today announcing a new sponsorship deal with npower, the UK largest electricity supplier, before the start of the new British Basketball League season which begins on the 21st September. The deal, which will also be matched on a pound for pound basis by the government’s Sportsmatch scheme, will help increase access to basketball facilities and coaching for youngsters in the Worcester area.

Twenty schools in the region will directly benefit from the deal, including Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College - who were invited to the University of Worcester today for a two-hour Master Class from some of the Wolves coaching staff and first team players.

Paul Coward, Area Leader for Physical Education at the School said: “We have a major focus at the College upon increasing participation and developing excellence in sport. A wide range of our youngsters will benefit from this partnership in both the short and long term.”

Director of basketball for Worcester Wolves, Mick Donovan, said: "Since our formation in 2000, we have been working hard to improve the team on the court and create opportunities for youngsters in the community. The partnership with npower is exciting for everyone involved with the club and is a great boost as we continue to establish Worcester in Britain's elite Basketball league."

Worcester MP Mike Foster was also present at the Master Class: he has played a key role in raising the awareness of the Wolves thriving community program, which incorporates over 50 county schools and reaches thousands of youngsters.

This year, there are also plans for Wolves players to visit primary schools and work with children and teachers in the classrooms to assist with developing numeracy and literary skills.

Kevin Miles, managing director of npower residential, commented: “We’re delighted to announce our sponsorship of Worcester Wolves. This deal underlines the company’s commitment to the club and to the local community”
