G.B. SQUADS ANNOUNCED
FOR THIS SUMMER |
02/04/08
GREAT
BRITAIN BASKETBALL SQUADS INCLUDE NBA NAMES
British
Basketball today announced the squad lists for the men’s and women’s EuroBasket
campaigns later this year and Chicago Bulls and NBA star Ben Gordon is amongst
the 33-man squad, which also includes his Bulls teammate and captain Luol Deng.
After initial
talks with Gordon last December, British Basketball has been encouraged by the
London-born guard’s attitude towards the campaign.
Ron Wuotila, British
Basketball Performance Manager, said: “He
has been very positive about playing and we are going to meet with him again, in
Chicago, within the next two weeks.
"The prospects
are bright for our senior teams this summer due to the talent included on these
squad lists. There are a number of younger players on the list who can
contribute in the near term and are embarking on a 10-15 year career that will
ideally include years of British representation."
Chris Finch, the Great Britain
men’s head coach, added:
"Each summer one
of our goals is to continually attract and involve GB's finest players. On this
list we have certainly targeted our best-ever group.
“Our challenge
now is to identify the best 12-14 players who will give us a shot at winning
through to Poland 2009. And, as ever, our success will be largely influenced by
the commitment these outstanding players make to the program."
In the women’s
squad is former WNBA player Megan Moody, who was one of Great Britain’s star
performers from last summer’s successful campaign and unsurprisingly head coach
Mark Clark is delighted with the additional names which have been added to the
mix.
Clark said: “I am
excited about the prospect of working with the players from this group. The
depth of available talent is clearly moving in the right direction and gives us
the opportunity to continue to develop the GB Programme to the levels required
to compete at the highest levels of international basketball.
“This initial
squad has a balance of experienced and young players with great potential. The
players on this list are aware that to compete at A Division level we will need
to step up our level of performance and I am confident that whoever is
ultimately selected for this summers team is capable of rising to that
challenge.”
15 to 20 players
will be invited to camp this summer from the following squad lists:
