17/09/07 The MetroRadio Arena and Newcastle Eagles basketball club are boasting a new basketball court ahead of the 2007/08 BBL Championship season. The Eagles had been playing on the same wooden court since their move to the arena in 1995 and the new court came about after the arena struck a strange deal with their sister venue The Konig-Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany. The German arena had only occasional use for their new £70,000 court and agreed to a swap which will see the Eagles' old court become an enormous dance floor! The court arrived in the North East via a very large lorry last month, and is currently being decorated with The Eagles' new logo and those of key sponsors. Paul Blake, General Manager for the Eagles said, 'To have a new court going into the start of this season is fantastic news for the organisation and once again underlines the support we continue to receive as a club from the team at the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena' Colin Revel, Arena Executive Director is delighted with the swap and cooperation of his German colleagues, 'One of the advantages of being a worldwide company is that we have access to a variety of resources, and with this being the start of an exciting new era for basketball, it was essential for the players to have a new court of the highest quality made available'. The court will be used for the first time on Friday 21st September, when the Eagles open the season with their first home match against the Poujoulat Heat Guilford. |
