The British Basketball League (BBL) are delighted to announce that London
United have joined basketball’s Premier League.
United have consistently finished amongst the top places in EBL Division One
since joining the division in 2003 and see the step up as the obvious choice
for an aspiring franchise.
“We are delighted to be joining Britain’s premier league and we are expanding
our horizons as a Club to not only play at the highest level in the UK, but
also to promote basketball across the main Olympic boroughs in London. We have
appointed a well respected coach in Tony Garbelotto who shares our vision to
move the Club forward and we will strive to meet the challenges ahead” said
Dave Schiller the Club's General Manager.
Director of Basketball and former Head coach Jack Majewski says “progression
to the higher division is the only natural move for us, we have always
maintained the desire to build the club which can compete on the European
scene and also nurture domestic talent mirrored by other continental clubs, we
are convinced London needs a high quality basketball organisation”. Jack will
be heavily involved in team affairs as well as sponsor relationships.
United played in BBL Trophy last season finishing with a 1-3 record in the
pool stages including narrow defeats to the Brighton Bears and Guildford Heat,
the latter after overtime.
“We are pleased to invite London United into the BBL. The club have outlined
plans for their future which as a whole we are very excited about. We look
forward to working with the United organisation and look forward to seeing
them in competition” said BBL Chairman Paul Blake.
Further information will be provided shortly from London United with regards
to specific details of their structure.
The 2006-07 BBL fixture list will be released in early August with the season
commencing on Friday 29th September 2006.
