BBL REDUCES "NON-NATIONAL" QUOTA

15/03/06

The Board of the British Basketball League (BBL) have agreed to amend their regulations on player eligibility for the 2006/07 season.

At a recent Board Meeting the representatives of the BBL member clubs agreed to reduce the number of non-national players from four per team to three. Additionally they gave a commitment to further reduce the number of non national players per team to two for the 2007/08 season subject to receiving continued support to help keep key British players in the UK.

BBL Chairman Paul Blake enthused “Currently two- thirds of the players in the BBL are British but we are committed, with the support of England Basketball, Great Britain Basketball and the Central Government Sports Agencies, to continue to drive this percentage higher to help aid the success of the national team”.

Both the English and Scottish National Team will shortly be in action in the Commonwealth Games in Australia. Six of the Scottish team have featured in the BBL with the Scoftish Phoenix Honda Record Rocks and of the twelve man England squad, nine currently suit up for BBL teams. As part of the BBL’s commitment to the national teams these players have been released throughout the season for training and throughout the whole month of March to allow adequate preparation time for the Games.

Editor's note: Does this mean that, from 2007, we may see the BBL teams back in the National Cup?
