HISTORY:

Derbyshire Arrows took over Sheffield Forgers’ franchise in the old Division 3, in 1998, running a squad based firmly on their junior development programme.

They had mixed success in the first two seasons, despite playing highly competitive basketball, but then an amazing transformation took place, which has turned a club which was rooted at the foot of the League into one which mounted a serious challenge for major honours.

There were two key factors in this turn-around – the recruitment of BBL veteran Garnet Gayle as player/coach, and the promotion to Division Two in the EBBA’s clean-sheet reorganisation.

Garnet put together a talented and highly competitive team, which took the division by storm in 2001, ending as Champions without a single defeat. The only disappointment that year was their defeat in the Final of the Division 2 Championship, played on their home court as part of a promotion which included the Division 3 Final.

The next season the team moved on to another level, and won the Division One title, with just two defeats, and this time added the divisional Championship, in the NBL Finals at Coventry. Promotion to the Conference was, however, denied on the basis that their court was not of a suitably high standard.

A second consecutive Division One League and Championship "double" was achieved in 2003, and this was followed by promotion to the Conference (renamed EBL Division One), to play as "City of Sheffield" at the newly built English Institute of Sport, close to Sheffield Arena.

In their second season in the top flight of EBL, the Arrows completed their remarkable rise, as they achieved the League, Championship and Trophy "treble", only losing out on a clean-sweep with a single-point defeat in the National Cup Final.

Arrows entered a "nursery" team, "University of Sheffield Arrows" into NBL Division 3 North in 2003, renaming it "City of Sheffield Arrows II" a year later.

The team appears to provide an opportunity for first team players to enhance their court time, and for promising youngsters to improve their game in a competitive environment, and stake their claim for a first team place.
