HISTORY:
Reading can claim to be the success story of the last few years,
having reached the 2003 Conference Championship Final only six seasons after
first entering the League!
Reading only entered the NBL
in 1997, won promotion at the first attempt, and in the reorganisation of 2000
they found themselves in Division One. They were there for just one season,
finishing second, and beating Oxford in the Championship Final, thus winning
promotion to the Conference after a mere four years in the league!
A creditable seventh place
finish showed that they were not just there to make up the numbers, and the
following seasons they continued their seemingly inexorable rise, finishing in
third and then second place. Won the National Cup, and reached EBL1 Championship
Final in 2005, and were League runners-up and Cup Finalists in '06, and went on
to lift the Championship trophy.
Now firmly
established among the elite teams of the EBL, Reading added to their silverware
collection in 2007, with victory in the Final of the National Trophy, and
retained the title in 2008.
Also in 2008 they came
agonisingly close to snatching the League title, beating Manchester in the final
game of the season, to draw level at the top, but losing out to the Magic on
points difference in the head-to-head. They thus finished as runners-up for the
third consecutive season.
