HISTORY:
Northampton '89ers, entered NBL
Division 2 in 1993, as part of the famous Northampton setup which had won five
Women's Championships (and had just appeared in their 11th Final), six Women's
Division 1 titles, and three National Cup Finals.
The team was based firmly on the
Under-18 squad which had just finished third in the Junior National League.
In 2000, the club administrators took
the decision to concentrate on Junior development, and the senior women's team
was taken over by Northampton Cobras.
The future of the Men's team was in
doubt for a considerable time, but a rescue package was put together by Garry
Swann, Mark Spatcher and Mark Wilson, with Dick Barrett as coach and Spatcher as
secretary, and the Northampton Neptunes were born - playing at a new venue at
Lings Forum.
Still in Division 2, the team had
effectively been "relegated", as Division 1 had split
into Conference and Division 1.
Neptunes were promoted (to the newly
renamed EBL Division 2) in 2003, having finished in third place,
but won the Men's Shield.
Steady progress in EBL2 saw them
achieve a third place finish in 2006. Initially they had their application for
promotion declined, as there was a ten point gap between the Neptunes and
runners-up Mansfield (who chose not to go up). However, when one team dropped
out of EBL1, and two others moved into the BBL, Northampton were invited to
accept late promotion - an offer which they accepted.
They proved competitive, but still
finished in last place in 2007, and returned immediately to EBL2.
