HISTORY:
Liverpool's website gives an
excellent potted
History of
the city's basketball team (though it seems to have ceased being updated in
2004).
Riversdale Atac came into being as a
YMCA team in 1969, moving to Riversdale College in 1973. Became Liverpool Atac
(playing at Everton Park) and won the Founder's Cup in 1991 and 1992.
Entered Carlsberg NBL Division 3 in
1992, remaining in that division when it was renamed NBL Division 2 (as the top
division renamed itself the BBL).
Promoted in 1996, from 3rd place, but
lost many senior players, and went straight back down after one season.
Finished second in 2000, securing a
place in NBL 1 (still, effectively, the third ranked division, below the BBL and
new NBL Conference) in the
reorganisation.
Survived (despite finishing 7th of 7)
after the first season, as the division expanded, but relegated (12th of 12) in
2002, to the regional NBL 2.
An undefeated League season, and
Championship victory, secured an immediate return in 2003, into the renamed EBL
Division 2, where a fine campaign resulted in a third place finish, behind the
two clubs promoted to Division 1, Worcester and North West London.
Proved their continued
competitiveness by lifting the Patron's Cup in 2006, after a thrilling overtime
Final against West Herts Warriors (who went on to win the EBL2 title, and
promotion).
However, they then lost many players,
endured a dreadful season in 2006-7, finished last, and were relegated to EBL3
North.
With the sudden appearance of Everton
Tigers in the BBL, Liverpool suffered even more in 2007-8, losing coach Henry
Mooney and several of their best players to the new outfit. Their strong
development base enabled them to continue, but they struggled badly, finishing
last in EBL3 North, losing every game by an average margin of 35 points.
