HISTORY:

Colchester Moels entered National League Division 2 in 1980, at the time when there were only two divisions in the League.

Having finished in fourth place in 1987, they withdrew before the start of the following season. However, having submitted an entry, and having thus been automatically placed in the draw for the Cup and Trophy, they did compete in those two competitions in 1987-8.

Colchester Alliance entered the new NBL Division 3 in 2000, and were "reorganised" into the regionalised Division 2, 2001.

Became Colchester United in 2002, in a tie-up with the football club.

Promoted to EBL2 in 2003, from second place in Div 2 North.

Became wholly-owned by the players in 2005, but finished in last place in EBL2 in 2006, despite having a 7&15 record that would have kept them out of the relegation zone in any previous season. Relegated to EBL3 South.

Renamed Colchester Hornets, 2007, and proceeded to win the Southern Division. Lost in quarter-final of play-offs, but gained a return to Division 2.
