Cardiff Clippers were admitted
to NBL Division 2 in 1998, but played their first season as "South Wales
Shooting Stars", to avoid confusion with Cardiff Phoenix, who were established
members of Division 1.
Second place in the Division, in
1998, won them promotion to Division 1, and the '98-'99 season saw two teams
from the same city, with the same geographic name, playing in the same Division,
for the first time in league history (though Phoenix were expelled before the
start of the following season).
Although they performed reasonably
well (finishing 7th in their first season in the top NBL division), 11th place
(out of 13) in 2000 was not enough to win them a place in the new Conference,
and they found themselves "relegated", staying in Division 1.
A disappointing season two years
later saw them finish next to last, and relegated to Division 2 South in 2002.
They narrowly failed to bounce
straight back the following season, when they finished third, but only behind
Colchester (who did gain promotion) on "count back".
