HISTORY:
Following success in the
Founder's Cup, Brixton first entered the National League in 1985 (playing as
Lambeth for season 1986-7), and soon gained a reputation for developing young
players. The nickname "Brixton Academy" was used long before formal academies
began to be set up. The prime mover within the club was (and remains) Jimmy
Rogers.
Many of the players developed,
particularly in those early years,
have gone on to enjoy glittering careers - examples include Ronnie and Stedroy
Baker, and Andrew Bailey.
Enjoyed success with runners-up
positions in 1988 and 1999, and appeared in the Championship Final in 1990 and
1996.
Gradually, however, the lure of
higher profile clubs made recruitment more difficult, and though the Topcats
remained a tough team against which to play, they slipped down the table,
finishing in last place in 1998 and 1999, despite having won the Junior NBL
title in 1997.
This led to a drop into NBL Division
2, at just the wrong time. Despite finishing in fourth place, the reorganisation
which saw the top division split into two consigned Brixton to the newly-named
NBL 2 ... effectively the third division.
That, naturally, had a further effect
on recruitment, but they gradually rebuilt, and in 2004 they picked up their
first serious silverware, the EBL Men's Shield, and this was followed by the
Southern division title of EBL 3. In 2005 they became the first team to appear
in three (consecutive) Shield Finals, though recording their second defeat.
The club chose to remain in EBL 3 for
the 2004-5 season.
A further period of struggle
followed, and in 2008, having finished eleventh (out of 12) in Division 3 South,
they found themselves relegated to Division 4 for the first time in their history.
However, by the time the fixtures for 2008-9 were published they were back in
Division 3 South - as the result of a successful appeal.
